Our Methodology: How PetCostPeek Calculates Pet Cost Estimates

2026-02-15 · 4 min read · Transparency

Data Sources

Our pet cost estimates are calculated using data from:
- ASPCA: Base annual cost estimates by pet type
- Bureau of Labor Statistics: Regional cost-of-living adjustments
- Breed-specific veterinary data: Health predisposition costs by breed
- Pet insurance industry data: Premium averages by breed and state

Calculation Method

For each breed-state combination, we start with national base costs and apply state-specific cost-of-living adjustments using our pet cost index. Breed-specific factors (size, health risks, grooming needs) further modify the estimates.

Limitations

These are estimates for educational purposes. Actual costs depend on the individual pet's health, your location within the state, chosen food quality, and vet preferences. Always budget a buffer above our estimates for unexpected expenses.

Updates

We update our data annually when new cost surveys and insurance data become available. Current data reflects 2025 estimates.
